Retaining Wall

So we've gotten Sullivan Nursery & Landscaping of Hanover, PA to building our retaining wall for us.

Alex at Sullivan has been an absolute pleasure to work with.  The wall is going up fast (and you already know this if you are one of my Facebook Friends).

This is just a little bit of props to Alex and company for the professionalism and the effort they are making with our crazy yard.

New Gutters

Stage one of the exterior beautification process is complete.  We now have new gutters serving our house.  With the removal of all the trees this spring, this should really help alleviate some of the headache that we've dealt with in years past.

See pictures in the gallery of the new gutters!

Exterior Facelift

We've just started to update the exterior of our home.  About six months ago we had three trees taken down.  It has really opened up our view and will dramatically drop on the number of leaves we need to deal with in the fall.

Most recenlty, we've started to sand down the desk to get a new coat of stain or paint.

We'll be putting up pictures as we we get them organized.  Keep your eyes out for an invite to a deck-warming party.

MythTV & MythVideo

I'm running MythDora 10.21 on a Dell Dimension 4100 with 2x Hauppauge PVR-350's connected to my home Comcast Cable System.

I've got the Metallurgy theme running and it's great (very clean lines and easy to navigate.

My problem arrises with MythVideo.  I can do a rip, but when I try to make the change to the IMDB number via MyhWeb I get the following error:

Error

Could not create a symlink to /home/mythtv/.mythtv/MythVideo, the local MythVideo artwork directory for this hostname (mythtv.kmsigma.com). Please create a symlink to your MythVideo directory at data/video_covers in order to use the video artwork portions of MythWeb

I've read a few postings, but many center around MythTV from SNV or from an original compilation, not a Fedora Spin.  Any chance some of the people browsing around the interweb can help me?

MythTV rises again!

Like the fiery Phoenix from the ashes, the MythTV box rises again! Back online again utilizing a single PVR-350 and the latest spin from MythDora (10.21) she lives again. If you have a compatible capture card, and a box with some disk space and not too much else, consider taking a look at MythDora. It has been by far the easiest installation and configuration that I've ever done for MythTV. So what do I have set for recording? The basics...
  • House
  • Heroes
  • Chuck
  • NCIS
  • Supernatural
  • Inside the Actors Studio
  • and a few choice others...

Chronicles of George

I've been working in IT for several years now and for the most part love it.

As a helpdesk agent, I got to work on the frontlines with the callers and generally got along well with them and with IT on the whole.  It's an odd razor's edge to walk between the user community and the IT Infrastructure.

Anyway, after a while I was promoted to a Shift Supervisor on same helpdesk and I ran into some of the issues that only Helpdesk Supervisors see.  I know that tickets I created were always concise and contained the extact right amount of information.  Too much is overkill and no one knows what the ticket is really about, and too little is just plain useless.

Not long after getting that particular gig, I found the Chronicles of George.  Needless to say I was in stitches for days reading over the tickets of the single worst helpdesk technician ever.  Spellcheck?  Why bother.  Knowing how a computer worked?  No way.  Having a single clue about Technology in general?  Over-rated.

So for all 2 of you who read this blog (*snicker*snicker*), I include a link to the ever popular, and always insightful, Chronicles of George.

XBOX 360 and Netflix

If you have an XBOX 360 and already have an Netflix account whcih allows for streaming content, then you are in luck.  The new XBOX Experience update from November 19th makes significant changes to the interface including access to the Netflix streaming content without the need for a Media Extender.  Note that the Media Externder bypass for Netflix before this is not a supported solution.

The only caveat that I can see is that you need XBOX Live Gold Membership.  At a cost of $50.00 per year, plug the (minimum) fee of Netflix with streaming at about $10 per month, makes this solution a little pricey.  But if you already are paying for each of these separately, I'd hightly recommend make this change.  If your Internet connection has enough bandwidth, you can even stream BluRay (or other HD) over the Internet.

This has been a great change.for people like me who want to consolidate the number of devices in the home entertainment center.

I have to say that if your Internet connection use is low, and your connection from the XBOX to your ISP is good, the definitioon is even better than our service from our cable provider.  At this rate, TV Entertainment over IP is getting closer to realization in my home.
